James Holkko, photographer

Based in Victoria (Lək̓ʷəŋən Traditional Territory) B.C., Canada. The love I have for photography has been passed down through generations. My Grandfather was a professional photographer in New York City, an owner/operator of a photo finishing business and I’ve been utilizing refined photographic techniques for as long as I can remember. I own and work with an extensive collection of professional camera and lighting equipment. With 20 years experience in desktop publishing, photo editing/retouching and event organizing, I’m very knowledgeable about any type of photography you’d like to produce for print and digital promotion. Additionally, with 15 years experience in event photography, based primarily in a photo journalistic style of photography, I know how to capture and convey both the subtleties and the overarching theme of your story. I look forward to collaborating with you to create amazing photography.

My work is influenced by Peter Lindbergh, Patrick Demarchelier, Luigi/Iango, Mario Testino and many more.  As well as helping to build model books, my fashion editorials have been published in Malvie, Intra, Moevir, Moveux, Fienfh, Goji, Raamat and Creators (a Victoria based fashion magazine).

Working with theatre groups is one of my favourite areas of my work. I’m constantly amazed by the creativity and collaborative effort involved in these productions. I’ve photographed cast and dress rehearsals for promotional purposes, live theatre and worked with several local performing art groups including Mountain Dream Productions and Hapax Theatre.

For the last three years I’ve been the official photographer for the Maritime Museum of B.C.  I’ve documented their annual Victoria Classic Boat Festival, Launch Events, Speakers Nights, Maritime Award Ceremonies and Special Events such as the arrival of Jeanne Socrates from a record breaking unassisted solo sail around the world. I’ve also been the official photographer for the Victoria Fringe Festival, HCP Arts and Music in the Gardens and Parks Canada Events. I volunteer my photography services for charitable events and several annual nature events to help promote nature awareness and sustainable living.
